Sex Chromosome Inactivation: The Importance of Pairing
نویسنده
چکیده
In mammals, the process of making sperm is marked by inactivation of sex chromosomes. Why and how does this happen? The answer apparently lies in whether a chromosome finds a pairing partner. Similar mechanisms in mold and worms reveal a surprising and recurrent theme throughout evolution.

Mammals that break the rules: genetics of marsupials and monotremes.
Marsupials and monotremes, the mammals most distantly related to placental mammals, share essentially the same genome but show major variations in chromosome organization and function. Rules established for the mammalian genome by studies of human and mouse do not always apply to these distantly related mammals, and we must make new and more general laws. Some examples are contradictions to our...
متن کاملX-Inactivation: Close Encounters of the X Kind
X chromosome inactivation ensures equal dosage of X-linked genes between male and female mammals. Two new studies have shown that the initiation of inactivation is preceded by X chromosome pairing; their results implicate this pairing in the choice and counting functions of X chromosome inactivation.
متن کاملX Chromosome Inactivation in Opioid Addicted Women
Introduction: X chromosome inactivation (XCI) is a process during which one of the two X chromosomes in female human is silenced leading to equal gene expression with males who have only one X chromosome. Here we have investigated XCI ratio in females with opioid addiction to see whether XCI skewness in women could be a risk factor for opioid addiction. Methods: 30 adult females meeting DS...
متن کاملError-Prone ZW Pairing and No Evidence for Meiotic Sex Chromosome Inactivation in the Chicken Germ Line
In the male mouse the X and Y chromosomes pair and recombine within the small pseudoautosomal region. Genes located on the unsynapsed segments of the X and Y are transcriptionally silenced at pachytene by Meiotic Sex Chromosome Inactivation (MSCI). The degree to which MSCI is conserved in other vertebrates is currently unclear. In the female chicken the ZW bivalent is thought to undergo a trans...
متن کاملSex chromosome silencing in the marsupial male germ line.
In marsupials, dosage compensation involves silencing of the father's X-chromosome. Because no XIST orthologue has been found, how imprinted X-inactivation occurs is unknown. In eutherians, the X is subject to meiotic sex chromosome inactivation (MSCI) in the paternal germ line and persists thereafter as postmeiotic sex chromatin (PMSC). One hypothesis proposes that the paternal X is inherited ...
